We tend to carry things for far too long, even after we're ready to put them down.
Past relationships, old hurt, disappointment, words that stayed with us, things we wish had happened differently. We can't change what has already happened, but we can choose what we want to carry forward.
This simple ritual is a quiet opportunity to acknowledge what you've been carrying, release what you're ready to leave behind, and create a little space for love, peace and new beginnings.
You don't need a collection of crystals or elaborate ritual tools. One crystal is enough. Choose one you already own, or simply use the crystal you feel most drawn to.
Crystals You Might Choose
Rhodonite
Traditionally associated with emotional healing, self-love, compassion and releasing old emotional patterns.
Rose Quartz
Associated with love, compassion, tenderness and opening the heart.
Smoky Quartz
Traditionally used for grounding, stability and letting go of energy that no longer feels supportive.
Lepidolite
Associated with calm, emotional balance, transition and gentle self-reflection.
Amethyst
Often chosen for peace, stillness, intuition and creating a calm space for reflection.
Moonstone
Traditionally connected with emotional balance, intuition, cycles and new beginnings.
You don't have to choose from this list. These are simply suggestions based on their traditional crystal associations. If another crystal calls to you, trust that instinct. There is no wrong choice.
A Simple Ritual for Release
Set aside around 10 minutes when you won't be disturbed. Find somewhere quiet and comfortable and place your chosen crystal in front of you.
Light a candle, then take a few slow breaths.
Let your shoulders drop. Allow yourself to become still, relax and breathe.
✧ What Have You Been Carrying?
Take a piece of paper and write down whatever you feel ready to release.
It might be a person.
A relationship.
A memory.
Regret.
Anger.
Guilt.
Fear.
Or simply the weight of something you've carried for longer than you realised.
Don't overthink it. Just write.
When you're finished, hold your crystal gently in your hands.
Close your eyes and take a slow breath.
Imagine everything you've written down as a dark, heavy cloud resting within your chest. Notice its weight without judging it.
With each slow breath, imagine that cloud beginning to loosen and lift. Watch it rise gently from your chest, moving upwards and away from you.
As it rises, feel some of that heaviness leaving with it.
Watch the cloud drift away until it becomes smaller and smaller, eventually disappearing into the distance.
Take another slow breath and notice the space it has left behind.
✧ The Release
When you're ready, burn the piece of paper in a suitable fireproof container, preferably outdoors or somewhere specifically designed for safely burning paper. Never leave a flame unattended.
✧ Your Words, Your Intention
There are no set words you have to use for this ritual.
The words below are simply a starting point. Change them, add your own words, or create something completely personal to you. Speak from the heart and let whatever feels right come naturally.
You might want to name what you're releasing, acknowledge what you've learned, or speak about what you hope to welcome into your life.
As you watch the paper turn to ash, you could say:
I release what I am ready to leave behind.
I release the hurt, the weight and the memories I no longer wish to carry.
I honour what has been, but I choose not to live there anymore.
I give myself permission to move forward.
My heart is still open to love.
I welcome peace, kindness and new beginnings.
What is meant for me will find me when the time is right.
And for now, I choose to be gentle with myself.
As the last of the paper turns to ash, take a slow breath and watch the smoke disappear.
Let yourself sit quietly for a moment.
Hold your crystal and notice how you feel. You don't need to force yourself to feel different. Simply acknowledge that you've taken a moment for yourself and made a conscious choice about what you want to carry forward.
When you're ready, gently blow out the candle.
The ritual is complete.
You Don't Have to Forget to Let Go
Letting go doesn't mean pretending something didn't happen.
It doesn't mean that what hurt you suddenly doesn't matter.
And it certainly doesn't mean that you have to be ready for new love before you're ready.
Sometimes letting go simply means saying:
"This happened. I survived it. And I don't want to carry it into everything that comes next."
You can return to this ritual whenever you feel the need to create a little more space within yourself.
And if a particular memory brings up emotions that feel overwhelming, you don't need to push through them. Pause, take care of yourself and seek appropriate support if you need it.
Your heart doesn't have to be forced open. It can open gently, in its own time. 🤍
