How to Care for Your Crystals

Your crystals have their own little personalities.

Some are perfectly happy sitting on a windowsill soaking up the sunshine. Others would much rather stay somewhere cool and shaded. Some can be gently rinsed with water, while others definitely shouldn't get wet.

So caring for your crystals isn't about following one set of rules.

It's about getting to know what your particular crystals need.

And once you know a few simple things, looking after them becomes easy.

Keep them clean

Crystals can collect dust, fingerprints and everyday grime just like anything else in your home.

For many crystals, a soft, dry cloth is all you need to keep them looking beautiful.

If you're thinking about using water, always check that your particular crystal is water-safe first.

Some crystals are porous, soft or contain minerals that can be damaged by water.

When in doubt, keep it dry.

A gentle wipe is much better than discovering you've accidentally turned your beautiful crystal into a very expensive pebble bath.

Be careful with sunlight

Natural light can be beautiful, and some crystals are perfectly happy in a sunny spot.

But prolonged exposure to strong sunlight can cause certain crystals to fade or change colour.

Amethyst and Rose Quartz, for example, are among the crystals that can be sensitive to prolonged direct sunlight.

So if you have a crystal you're particularly fond of, think about where you're placing it.

A little morning sunshine is one thing.

Leaving a colour-sensitive crystal on a blazing windowsill for months is another.

Water isn't always your friend

This is one of the biggest things to remember when caring for crystals.

Some crystals are perfectly happy being rinsed gently with water.

Others can be damaged by it.

And some should never be submerged.

Certain minerals can dissolve, flake, rust, become brittle or otherwise change when exposed to water.

That means the idea that every crystal should be cleansed under running water isn't a good one.

Before using water, check whether your crystal is suitable for it.

And if you're unsure?

Choose a dry cleansing method instead.

Give them somewhere safe to live

Your crystals don't need a special display cabinet, although there's absolutely nothing wrong with creating one if you fancy it. 💎

A shelf, tray, bowl or little corner of your home can be enough.

Think about where your crystals are likely to be knocked, dropped or exposed to things that could damage them.

Some crystals are surprisingly delicate.

Others are harder and much more robust.

Keeping particularly fragile pieces somewhere safe can save you from discovering that gravity has developed a personal grudge against your favourite crystal.

Be gentle with your crystals

Crystals can be tougher than they look, but they're not indestructible.

Some can scratch easily.

Some have natural fractures or delicate points.

Some polished pieces can chip if they're dropped onto a hard surface.

If you're moving or rearranging your collection, handle your crystals gently and give delicate pieces a little extra care.

Those natural marks and inclusions that make a crystal unique are beautiful, but they can also mean that particular pieces need a softer touch.

And what about cleansing?

Cleansing is a lovely part of many people's crystal practice.

Some people cleanse their crystals when they first bring them home.

Others do it after they've been working with a crystal regularly.

Some simply cleanse when a crystal feels like it needs a reset.

There are lots of different ways to cleanse crystals, but not every method is suitable for every stone.

That's why it's worth learning about your particular crystal before reaching for water, salt, sunlight or anything else.

You can explore different cleansing methods and find the ones that feel right for you.

Trust your relationship with them

Over time, you'll probably start to notice which crystals you reach for most often.

You'll learn which ones are delicate.

Which ones enjoy a sunny spot.

Which ones prefer to stay dry.

And which ones you've somehow managed to move around the house seventeen times because they keep finding their way into different corners.

Your crystals become part of your space and your everyday life.

Looking after them can be as simple as keeping them clean, handling them gently and paying attention to what each one needs.

There doesn't need to be a complicated routine.

A little care goes a long way.

And perhaps that's part of the joy of having crystals around you.

You get to know them.

You learn their little quirks.

You notice which ones you're drawn to.

And over time, caring for them becomes another part of the connection you build with them. 💎🌿
